Boston Police Rogues Gallery is established.

1851

Pickpockets, burglars and streetwalkers – although not under arrest – are required to present themselves before the police force weekly – so they might be identified later. When they leave the station, they are set upon by citizens who tear at their clothes and mark their backs with crosses in chalk. Photographs are added to the gallery in 1870, the files contain 1,400 likenesses by 1878.
